These are a few of my favourite things

by Anna Blanch on December 19, 2008

Long before Oprah there existed a list of favourite things. Those things which make your life a little brighter. When I was a child I sang “My Favourite Things” with my grandmother. In case you don’t know the lyrics by rote:

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens,
bright copper kettles and warm woollen mittens
brown paper packages tied up with strings,
these are a few of my favorite things.

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels,
door bells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles.
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings.
these are a few of my favorite things.

They may seem silly things – and so may my list of favourite things. But, then again, this is MY list…

1. Fresh Flowers – There is nothing like the beauty of fresh flowers! As for my favourites of this favourite thing, there is a different flower for every mood! I love lillies most of all, but really fresh flowers of almost any kind are sure to evoke a smile – tulips, gerberas, roses, waratahs. My grandparent’s Rose Garden is one of my favourite places on the planet!

2. Skype – This is the best invention since sliced bread as far as I am concerned; best of all it’s free! With the addition of a webcam all those science fiction fantasies about video conference calls to other continents are realised!

3. Herbal Teas – I can drink black tea and enjoy, but I usually only drink it when I am with other people. My first choice is pretty much always Herbal tea. Like Flowers, this is all about my mood: anything from cammomile, . My favourite tea store is The Tea Centre.

4. My Camera – My Nikon D70 SLR is like another limb. I love the quality of shots I can achieve with this camera, and most of the photos I post on this blog have been taken with this camera. For accessories and equipment I use Adorama (they have a store in NY, but the ship free in the US ). For prints I use Shutterfly – the quality is great, they will print large scale, and they deliver them to my door.

5. Music – whether it is music to dance to, run to, clean by, or study to, I love music! I recently discovered Pandora – a great online site that lets you discover new music based on the style/speed/musical elements of a target song, group, or style.

6. Handwritten letters and cards – Email is great for speed, but there is nothing better than receiving a handwritten letter or card. And yes, I keep them! I love to make cards and so beautiful paper and cards are a must.

7. Beautiful Journals – I write more than I type; which is to say, I write alot. For years, I have vacillated between simple black covered lines journals from the newsagency or supermarket, and one of a kind journals with beautiful fabric covers or embossed leather with beautiful pages. I have received most of the latter as gifts from friends who know how much I appreciate beautiful books in which to write. Some of the beautiful journals on my current wishlist include some of these from JenniBick though I have found some gems at the Dollar Store or on clearance tables…

8. Full text Websiteswww.biblegateway.com and googlebooks are awesome.

9. Old Books and Secondhand bookstores – So, at some point in my life I will be visiting Hay-on-Wye in the UK (it has more bookstores per capita than any place in the world) but in the meantime one of my favourite pastimes is wandering through secondhand bookstores. I love the smell and feel of old books (which is good thing in my line of work) – and there is nothing better than to read a book many others have read before. I always feel a little self conscious around books where the spine has never been cracked!

I am done for the time being….So, Back to “My Favourite things” – here’s a version from a 2006 London stage show:

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes,
snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
silver white winters that melt into springs,
these are a few of my favorite things.

When the dog bites, when the bee stings,
when I’m feeling sad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
and then I don’t feel so bad.
