Sometimes I have moments where I realise that i am built to be a scholar. By that i mean, I get excited about things that the vast majority of the population wouldn’t even bat an eyelid over, or worse would roll their eyes, while I giddy with delight or with crazy smile chuckling (i never giggle) to myself in anticipation walk with additional bounce in my step! So what’s this got to do with Hannah More?
Plenty i say. I might stop here for a brief digression and say that reference librarians are some of my favourite people. Why? 1) because they love books 2) they love finding books and resources and 3) because they are actually interested in what i am working on meaning they send me emails when they come across resources that might be useful for my research! So kudos to reference librarians all around and to my favourite of all – Dr Eileen Bentsen!
Why am I excited….? Well, The William and Mary Clark Library at UCLA has a collection of Hannah More materials including Cheap Repository Tracts, correspondence (that which her biographer didn’t destroy in the 1850’s) along with some other materials…and they have recently made their collection available on microfilm. 17 rolls of microfilm. This makes me, presently located in Central Texas, one very happy researcher. Next, thanks to the trusty wonder that is Interlibrary loan….I should shortly have those three rolls of microfilm in my hot little hands!
