Quote of the Week: On Reading and the Good of it!

by Anna Blanch on October 14, 2009

So, i’ve succumbed. Like many I have some sort of ailment. It may just be the seasonal flu – for the first time in six years I haven’t had the flu vaccine and it won’t be a mistake I make again. However, all this intercontinental travel got the better of that part of my planning.

Thus, i am reading…and resting. It could be worse – I can still call some of this work!

No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance. – Confucius

Education […] has produced a vast population able to read but unable to distinguish what is worth reading. – G.M. Trevelyan

You don’t have to burn books to destroy a  culture. Just get people to stop reading them. – Mahatma Ghandi

Reading well is one of the great pleasures that solitude can afford you. – Harold Bloom.

and my two favourite insults wrapped in flattery….

Thankyou for sending me a copy of your book. I’ll waste no time reading it. – Moses Hadas.

From the moment I picked up your book until I laid it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Some day I intend reading it. – Groucho Marx

I’ll be getting back to a regular posting rhythm again soon, but for the time being enjoy these!
