Some folks you need to meet: Sam Van Eman

by Anna Blanch on December 10, 2009

On the first day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
A partridge in a pear tree.

The first cab off the rank in my series on Some Folks you Need to Meet and the 12 days of Community is Sam Van Eman.
He’s the author of New Breed of Advertisers and a contributor to Highcallingblogs. I asked Sam some questions to get to know the what and why of his involvement with Highcalling and with the blogosphere…

Tell me about your blog?
New Breed of Advertisers is an attempt to encourage marketing types in their love for God and neighbor. These poor folks face all the known industry issues – manipulation, exploitation, pro-consumerism – but we can help them toward a compassion- and service-based vision.

One of the first steps might be to discourage the question, “How can I get customers to fall in love with my product?” and replace it with, “How can I love by getting this product to my customers?”
NBoA criticizes the bad and praises the good in advertising, all (hopefully) toward this end.

Is there anything in particular that has captured your imagination in the last week?
The execution of this Verizon commercial. I get it, and I’ve been in enough spotty places to make me get it even more. Plus the timing and delivery of “No, no. You’re good” is perfect!

Is there a post or two that epitomizes what you write about?
Hmm. Try Shoemakers in Corinth and Soaked to the skin

How long have you been part of highcalling?
Marcus Goodyear welcomed me sometime during the spring of 2008 and I’ve been happy ever since.

Why did you join?
Seriously. That man has good gifts in both hospitality and genuine communication. Before that I had checked out the scene because HCB and my employer share a similar organizational calling: The CCO partners with churches, colleges and organizations to develop men and women who live out their Christian faith in every area of life. What better partner than HCB for my work in the area of life called “advertising”?

Is there a blog or two from the network you’d recommend?
On the work/faith topic, I really enjoy Shrinking the Camel and Every Square Inch. Engaging, consistent writers.

I really appreciate Sam taking the time to answer some questions. I hope you also take some time to check out and comment on Sam’s blog!
