Quote of the Week: Edith Hamilton on Faith and Literature

by Anna Blanch on March 12, 2010

American educator and popularizer of Greek and Roman literature, Edith Hamilton has a couple of aphoristic sayings I think interesting enough to be the Quote of the Week:

“Faith is not belief. Belief is passive. Faith is active.”

“A people’s literature is the great textbook for real knowledge of them. The writings of the day show the quality of the people as no historical reconstruction can.”
