All Bull Aside (The Grad School Song)

by Anna Blanch on January 10, 2012

I am from the bush. In Australia that the bit between the coast and the outback. It’s not really the bit that you hear much about outside Australia. People are too busy reveling in tales of the desert or waxing lyrical about Sydney harbour and all its wonders, or Melbourne and its weather!

It’s there in the bush, where i’m from, that you’ll find country music.

Somehow, in a way that why this song makes me laugh…it seems incongruous even to me that i would have a soft spot for a country song about finishing the PhD. However, It also reminds me of the awesome article  by Rauser titled “Theology as a Bull Session” which is one of the most down-to-earth journal articles i’ve ever read and has shaped the way i think about scholarly communication, the purpose of theology and what I should be aiming for. Find it. Read it. Let me know if you need a citation.

All Bull Aside (The Grad School Song)
Written by Steve Verrill, C 2005

The task was difficult almost impossible
He didn’t know what he would do
Everyone said it was just a matter of
Having the right attitude

But his mind was tired and his body was fading fast
He didn’t know how much longer he could last
Then quick as they came the doubts began to subside
It was time to get to work and set all bull aside

He hit the books with new energy and
Returned to his writing again
The words flowed quickly it was as if he
Could do the work of ten

But his mind was tired and his body was fading fast
He didn’t know how much longer he could last
Then quick as they came the doubts began to subside
It was time to get to work and set all bull aside

The task was over another replaced it
The process began anew
Grad school was filled with valleys and peaks and
There wasn’t much he could do

Cause his mind was tired and his body was fading fast
He didn’t know how much longer he could last
Then quick as they came the doubts began to subside
It was time to get to work and set all bull aside

But his mind was tired and his body was fading fast
He didn’t know how much longer he could last
Then quick as they came the doubts began to subside
It was time to get to work and set all bull aside

It was time to get to work and set all bull aside

But the task was difficult almost impossible
He didn’t know what he would do
